MBK: Lasers fall to #4 Amherst; Masciarelli scores 16 to lead Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Eric Sellew (Carlisle, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points in Amherst College's 86-48 non-conference men's basketball win against Lasell University Tuesday night in the Athletic Center.

The Mammoths start the season off 1-0 after ranking #4 in D3hoops.com pre-season poll, while the Lasers drop to 0-4.

Senior Stefan Masciarelli (Northbridge, Mass.) led the Lasers with 16 points with an efficient night from the field shooting 54 percent. Junior Kevin Nunez (Dorchester, Mass.) followed behind Masciarelli with 11 points of his own. At the center position, junior Jonathan Friberg (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished with eight points and led the team with eight rebounds in the loss.

The visiting Mammoths produced even scoring all around with Sellew finishing with 17 points followed by junior Fru Che (Somerville, Mass.) with 15. The Amherst bench contributed to the win by scoring 41 of the team's 86 total points.

The visitors found themselves out to an early lead halfway through the first half (22-8). The Mammoths continued to push the ball successfully throughout the half to increase their lead to 46-20 at the break.

Amherst came out of the half and continued to apply pressure on the Lasers. A layup from Che increased the advantage for the visitors to 61-34 with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Mammoths finished the second half on a 25-14 run to seal the win.

Lasell will play again this Thursday, November 21 at Tufts University. The Mammoths will play their home opener against Elmira College on Friday, November 22.
