MBB: Lasell falls short at Regis

WESTON, Mass. – Four Regis College players reached double figures in points and six players collected at least four rebounds Saturday afternoon as the Pride defeated Lasell College, 73-63, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game at Higgins Court.

The Pride evened the season score between the two schools at one game apiece after Lasell edged Regis 72-71 back in November in a non-conference encounter, overcoming a 21-point second-half deficit.

Senior Jordan Seldon (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Pride with 20 points, while sophomore Juvens Dalger (City of Sunrise, Fla.) finished with 14 points and nine boards. Sophomore Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) collected 12 points and nine rebounds, senior Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) added 11 points, and sophomore Devante Thompson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) contributed five points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Junior Stefan Masciarelli (Northbridge, Mass.) led the Lasers with 22 points, while sophomore Kevin Nunez (Dorchester, Mass.) added 17 points and five rebounds, sharing team-high honors. Sophomore Vic Collazo (Clearwater, Fla.) chipped in with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Regis scored five straight points early in the first half to establish an 11-6 advantage, and then the two teams basically traded points for an extended period of time. After Masciarelli hit two free throws to pull Lasell within two at 30-28, the Pride scored 12 unanswered points in the final three minutes of the first half and the first possession of the second half to take their biggest lead of the game at 42-28.

Lasell battled back, putting together a 12-2 scoring run, led by six points from Nunez, with sophomore Liam Jacobs (Plainfield, Conn.) hitting a three-pointer to close the Laser deficit to 44-40 five minutes into the second half. The Pride responded with a 7-2 scoring run over the next two minutes, starting with four points from Dalger and concluding with three points by Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, R.I.) to extend the lead back to nine at 51-42.

After a three-pointer by Masciarelli brought the Lasers back within four at 53-49, Regis scored six straight points to increase its lead back to 10 at 59-49. A three-pointer by sophomore Dylan Murray (Williston, Fla.) started a 7-0 run by Lasell that brought the visitors within three at 61-58 with 4:12 remaining in the second half, but the Pride once again scored six unanswered points, punctuated by a steal and layup from Seldon, to keep Lasell at arm's length the rest of the way.

Lasell (4-12, 2-2 GNAC) steps out of conference to host Tufts University Tuesday at 8 p.m. Regis (7-11, 2-2 GNAC) continues its home stand Tuesday with a GNAC contest against Suffolk University at 6 p.m.
