NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Sam Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) and senior Riley Musial (Clinton, Conn.) scored two goals apiece Saturday afternoon as Lasell College defeated Regis College, 6-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey game at Regis Stadium.
Lasell won its third game in a row to improve to 13-5 overall and 6-0 in GNAC play, while Regis drops to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The stage is now set for Lasell to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Saint Joseph's College (Maine). The Lasers and Monks (15-1, 6-0), the GNAC champion the past two years, are tied for first place with unbeaten conference records and will meet with the top seed in the GNAC Tournament on the line.
Lasell jumped on the board quickly as Musial scored her first goal in the fourth minute. Exactly four minutes later, sophomore Megan Horrigan (Wakefield, Mass.) set up Taylor for her 15th goal of the season, extending the Laser lead to 2-0.
Just over 10 minutes after Taylor's goal, senior Cailin Flannery picked up her GNAC-leading 20th goal of the year. That goal also matches the school record, set by Caitlyn Walker in 2008. Taylor would strike again near the end of the first half, scoring her second goal of the match in the 33rd minute to give Lasell a 4-0 lead at halftime.
After taking just one shot in the first half, Regis was able to create more offensive chances in the second half, culminating with a goal by Ashley Chipman (Stoughton, Mass.) in the 54th minute. However, Lasell would pull away thanks to Musial's second goal of the game in the 58th minute and a tally by Horrigan in the 66th minute.
Freshman Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) made four saves for Lasell, all in the second half, as she earned her seventh victory of the season. Erin Moore (Rosedale, Md.) played the entire match in net for the Pride, collecting a career-high 11 saves.
