Lasell Field Hockey nips Roger Williams in double overtime

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) scored two goals Thursday evening, including the game-winner in the second overtime, as Lasell College defeated Roger Williams University, 4-3, in non-conference field hockey action at Bayside Field.

The Lasers came back from two one-goal deficits to capture their fourth win in a row, improving to 8-4 overall, while the Hawks drop to 6-6.

Flannery's game-winner came with less than four minutes left in the second overtime, with an assist from junior Sam Taylor (Hanover, Mass.). Taylor finished the game with a goal and an assist.

Hannah Palmer (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored her third goal of the season in the ninth minute of the game, putting the Hawks in the lead at 1-0. Three minutes later, Lasell fired back with a goal from Taylor to tie the game 1-1 with 22 minutes left in the first half.

Sydney McCarthy (Littl  Falls, N.Y.) scored for the Hawks in the 18th minute, with an assist from Anna Vasaturo (Pittsford, N.Y.), putting the home team in the lead once again at 2-1. Despite being outshot by Lasell, the Hawks stayed in the lead going into the second half.

Flannery scored an unassisted goal for the Lasers 12 minutes into the second half, tying the game 2-2. Five minutes later, Riley Musial (Clinton, Conn.) scored for Lasell, with an assist from Megan Horrigan (Wakefield, Mass.) to put the Lasers in the lead for the first time at 3-2.

With less than four minutes left in regulation, Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal for the Hawks, tying the game at 3-3 and sending the game into overtime.

Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.) stayed busy in goal with seven shots from Lasell in overtime, five on goal. She made a great stick save in the 76th minute to help preserve the lead. Neither team touched the back of the game as and the game went into double overtime.

With less than four minutes left in double overtime, Flannery took an assist from Taylor to give the Lasers the victory.

Flanagan had a career-high 19 saves for RWU, while Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) had 11 saves for Lasell.

Lasell will travel to Anna Maria for a great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Roger Williams will travel to Endicott next Wednesday.
