NEWTON, Mass. (11/4/17) - The Lasell College field hockey team's banner season came to a bittersweet end, after a 3-0 defeat in their first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship match against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon on Grellier Field.  

The Monks scored all three goals in the second half to secure the win for their second straight conference title and an automatic bid into the NCAA field hockey tournament.  Lasell ends their season at 16-4 after finishing an undefeated conference season, while the Monks finish at 15-5 and await their opponent for the National tournament.  

After a quiet first half, sophomore Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) put the Monks on the board just under five minutes into the second half when she beat a Lasell defender and finished in the top right corner. Junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) extended the Monks lead 2-0, scoring her fourth goal of the season off a feed from freshman Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) in the 62nd minute.  Pomerleau secured the 3-0 victory at 67:28 when sophomore Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) sent a through ball to beat Lasers goalkeeper Denise Landry (New Mildford, Conn.) to the left corner.  

Junior Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) led the Lasers in shots with five, but the Monks defense held their own and shut down all Laser offensive threats.  

Landry recorded two saves and finishes the season with a tremendous 16-4 record. Megan Baker backstopped the Monks with two saves in the championship shutout and holds a 14-5 record heading into the National tournament.
