Smith Clips Field Hockey 2-1

(Northampton, Mass.) – The Lasell field hockey team lost their third game of the season, 2-1 to Smith College on Wednesday afternoon. The Lasers drop to 11-3, while the Pioneers even out at 6-6.

Smith senior Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 with 18:07 on the clock on an assist from sophomore Vivian Nelson (Alberta, Canada/Strathcona). Smith controlled the pace of play for the rest of the half, holding an 8-0 advantage in shots into the break.

Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 46:40 mark on an unassisted goal. Lasell's Erica Connors (South Berwick, Maine) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 57th minute to break the Pioneers' clean sheet.  Connors took a pass from Claire Shepherd (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and dribbled it five yards to the right of the cage before blasting the shot into the back corner.

Each team would have one more corner opportunity but was unable to take advantage.

Lasell goalkeeper goalie Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) shouldered the loss with 11 saves, while smith goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) earned the victory with two stops.

The Lasers will honor their even seniors prior to their next contest on Saturday, October 14 at 12:00 p.m. against Regis. Smith hosts No. 2 ranked Babson College also Saturday at noon.
