Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Battle to No. 16 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (10/5/17) – The Lasell field hockey team netted a goal against No. 16 MIT, but the Engineers came out with the 3-1 result on Thursday evening at Jack Barry Field. The non-conference tilt was the completion of a contest from September 14th that was suspended due to lightning with 3:26 remaining in the first half as MIT led 2-0 over the Lasers.

The Lasers suffer just their second loss of the season, both to NEWMAC opponents, and drop to 10-2, while the win boosts MIT to 10-2 overall.

MIT junior Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) put the Engineers on the board 3:26 into the contest when she deflected senior Katie Notarangelo's (Foxboro, Mass.) cross at the near post. The Engineers increased their advantage to 2-0 just over four minutes later following a penalty corner. Lasell goalie Denise Landry (New Medford, Conn.) kicked away senior Emily Penn's (Columbia, Md.) initial shot, however, the rebound went directly to freshman Megan Flynn (Branchburg, N.J.) at the top of the arc. She immediately sent the ball back in to sophomore Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) who redirected it for the goal.

As play resumed, neither team had a scoring chance over the last 3:26 of the half as the game headed to the break at 2-0 in favor of MIT.

The Lasers cut the lead in half on one of their five penalty corners of the second period as Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.) took a pass from Mindy Esposito (Sunderland, Mass.) and fired it into the left side of the net just 8:36 into the second. Lasell's Cailin Flannery (Newton, N.J.) had a great chance with 19:15 remaining, but that was turned aside by MIT freshman goalie Grace Moore (Boston, Mass.).

Notarangelo and Goetz combined for a key insurance goal with 13:33 remaining as Goetz fired a shot towards the left side of the net that was tipped in by Notarangelo for the 3-1 advantage.

The Lasers had another promising chance with 10:45 on the clock as Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) had the ball tipped away just at the last second as she was taking on Moore one-on-one. Taylor nearly scored with under a minute left as well, as she picked off an MIT pass near midfield and blasted a shot that was saved by Moore.

Notarangelo and Goetz each finished with a goal and an assist in the victory as the Engineers outshot the Lasers by a 19-8 margin.

Landry made nine stops in net for Lasell, including a variety of bids inside chaos ensuing MIT's 13 penalty corners. Moore made seven saves to earn her 10th win of the season

The Lasers will host Saint Joseph's Maine on Saturday, October 7 in a crucial conference contest at Grellier Field. The battle between the two undefeated teams in GNAC play begins at 12:00 p.m. MIT is back in action on Saturday, October 14th as the Engineers travel to WPI for a NEWMAC game beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Worcester.
