Second Half Surge Lifts Field Hockey Past Ida 6-1

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell field hockey team scored five times in the second half to remain undefeated in conference play, 6-1, against Mount Ida College Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Senior Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) scored her team-high 16th goal of the year to level the game at 1 after Lasell had taken a lead less than three minutes in on the first of two goals on the day by Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.). Minicucci took a penalty corner from Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) and slammed the ball into the cage. 

Pignone scored the eventual game-winner off of a rebound six minutes into the second half, and the Lasers scored three times in the next five minutes to take control of the game. Junior Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) had assists on three straight goals in the second half. 

Leah Sullivan (Mansfield, Mass.), Erica Connors (South Berwick, Maine), and Mindy Esposito (Sunderland, Mass.) scored before the three-quarters of an hour mark, and Julia Franzik

(Wallingford, Conn.) capped the scoring for Lasell with her second goal of the year just over an hour in. 

Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) made two stops in the win for Lasell, who bounce back from a loss their last time out to improve to 9-1 and 4-0 in the GNAC. 

Sophomore goalie Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, Maine) made 12 saves, as Lasell had a 29-7 shot advantage and a 19-3 edge in penalty corners.

Lasell travels to New England College at 4 pm Tuesday afternoon in another out of league game at New England College, while Mount Ida hosts UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in a non-conference affair.
