WPI Narrowly Ends Field Hockey's Undefeated Streak

WORCESTER, Mass. (9/26/17) – The Lasell field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season to WPI, 2-0, on Tuesday evening at Alumni Stadium. After its longest winning streak in program history, the Lasers shift to 8-1, while the Engineers improve to 5-2 overall with their third straight home victory.

WPI got on the scoreboard early following a penalty corner when Kaitlyn Hess' (Milford, N.H.) hard shot from the left side ripped towards the far post, tipped off Abby O'Sullivan's stick and crossed the goal line just 5:06 into the contest.

The Lasers had their most promising scoring chance in the 27th minute but Cailin Flannery's (Medford, N.J.) bid was repelled by Karen Murshrall.

The Crimson and Gray got an important insurance tally midway through the second half when O'Sullivan knocked her own rebound out of midair into the back for the net for the freshman's fifth goal of the year at 52:57.  Lasell had its best opportunity of the second stanza with 10 minutes remaining when it appeared Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.) had Mushrall fully extended on the ground but the junior's shot hit the post and stayed out.

Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) was strong in net for the Lasers with nine saves, while Mushrall was credited with four saves, tallying her third shutout of 2017.

WPI held a 19-6 edge in shots and double the Lasers in penalty corners by a 10-5 margin.

Lasell heads to cross-town rival Mount Ida College for a noon tilt on Sunday, while WPI hosts Springfield at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
