Field Hockey: Lasers Blank Becker 10-0 in Season Debut

NEWTON, Mass. (9/2/17) – The Lasell field hockey team came flying out of the gates in their season opener, defeating Becker College 10-0 at Grellier Field Saturday afternoon.

Seven different Lasers scored in the effort, including a hat-trick performance from junior Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.). Pignone scored back-to-back opening goals less than five minutes in, and set the Lasers up for a 5-0 advantage before halftime.

Freshman Claire Shepherd (Huntington, Beach, Calif.) joined Pignone with her first goal in a Lasell uniform, on a 1v1 showdown with junior keeper Alexis Barry (Manchester, N.H.). Barry recorded ten saves in the deficit, including seven in the first half.

The Lasers saw an additional multi-goal performance from junior Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.), who finished the day with two markers. Returners Julia Franzik (Wallingford, Conn.), Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.), Erin Murray (Lexington, Mass.), and Izzy Contois (Conway, Mass.) rounded out Lasell's scoring with a single goal apiece.

Senior Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) earned the victory inside the cage for Lasell, while classmate Brianna Kulvete (Templeton, Mass.) recorded a save in second-half relief.

The Lasers jump into Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday, September 6 as they face the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales at 4:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I. The Hawks take on GNAC foe Mount Ida College on Tuesday, September 5 in Newton, Mass. at 6:00 p.m.
