Johnson & Wales Tops Field Hockey on Senior Day, 1-0

NEWTON, Mass. (10/15/16) -- The Lasell College field hockey team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 setback to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson & Wales University on Saturday at Grellier Field.

Lasell dips to 9-6 on the season and 2-4 in GNAC play after it was shut out for just the second time this season, while JWU moves to 6-8 and 4-1 in conference contests.

Before the game, the Lasers honored seniors Courtney Braman (Gardner, Mass.) and Brianna Longo for their contributions to the program over the past four years. Braman recorded one shot in the game, while sophomore Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) led Lasell in that category with six shots, four of which went on goal.

Sophomore Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped all eight shots on goal she faced, earning her sixth win and first shutout of the season in net for JWU.

However, the Lasers finished the contest with a 13-8 overall shot advantage, including a 6-2 count in the first half. Lasell junior Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) needed to make just two saves in the opening period, but neither team found the back of the net.

It was not until the 53rd minute when the visiting Wildcats scored the game's first and only goal as sophomore Madeline Larson (Catonsville, Md.) beat Landry for her third goal of the season, picking up a loose ball at the net front off an assist from Glenna Dunlop.

Nolan made four stops in each half, including two in a 61st-minute Lasell flurry to preserve the shutout. The Wildcats earned nine of the game's 17 penalty corners.

The Lasers return to Grellier Field to face the Colonials of Western Connecticut State in their final home game of the season on Tuesday, October 18 at 4:00 p.m. The Wildcats are off until Thursday, October 20 when they visit Springfield College for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
