Field Hockey Wins Third Straight at Wheelock

Field Hockey Wins Third Straight at Wheelock

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Lasell field hockey team won its third straight contest at Wheelock College, 5-2, in non-conference action Thursday evening at Winsor Field.

Sophomore mid Julia Franzik (Wallingford, Conn.) put the Lasers on the board first in the fourth minute of the contest when she ripped a shot from the top right side of the circle all on her own. Five minutes later, the Laser lead doubled to two, as Franzik found an open Mindy Esposito (Sunderland, Mass.) who was able to lift the ball over the scrum and into the net.

Wheelock fought back though, cutting the deficit in half with under two minutes to go in the period after junior forward Abbey Raymond (Salem, N.H.) found first year midfielder Julia D'Onofrio (Salem, N.H.) in a scramble in front of the cage.

The Wildcats rode that same momentum into the second half, and freshman midfielder Melanie Newberg (Raynham, Mass.) was able to tie things up, 2-2, thanks to a big run and cross from Emma Panto (Somers, Conn.).

That was as close as the host team would get, however, as a three goal Lasell run eventually put the game away at 5-2.

Sophomore forward Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) found herself all alone and up the middle on a breakaway, scoring Lasell's third goal at 40:51. Then, Flannery netted the next goal for the visitors as well, just under three minutes later. The fifth and final Lasell goal of the night came from Izzy Contois (Conway, Mass.), thanks to a Franzik assist in the 68th minute.

Wheelock held a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners, but the Lasers were able to outshoot the Wildcats, 12-8.

Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) picked up three stops for the win, while senior goalkeeper Jenna O'Leary (Freetown, Mass.) recorded a pair of saves in the loss,

Lasell returns to action on Saturday, October 15 when they host Johnson and Wales at noon in honor of the two graduating seniors. Wheelock also returns to play on Saturday when they travel to Daniel Webster College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
