Sharks Edge Field Hockey 2-1

BOSTON, Mass. – The Lasell field hockey team fell to the Great Northeast Athletic (GNAC) conference reigning champions Simmons College, 2-1, on Saturday morning at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Lasers fall to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

First year forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Sharks to 6-4 overall, including a perfect 3-0 in league play.

Simmons controlled the majority of the match, holding a 10-5 shot advantage and an 8-4 margin on penalty corners.

Trull gave the Sharks a 1-0 edge just 69 seconds into the match when senior forward Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) fed her with a short cross in the left slot for a shot inside the left post. Simmons added a goal with 5:12 left in the opening half to take a 2-0 lead. Trull sent a lead cross to sophomore forward Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) who carried the ball into the circle, before unleashing a shot into the back of the cage on the right side.

The Sharks looked poised to register a shutout, but Lasell scored with 6:06 left in the contest. Sophomore forward Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) picked up a rebound shot from first year forward Grace Duguay (Watertown, Mass.) and slipped behind the defense for her eighth goal of the year to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

Neither team was able to score for the rest of the match, leaving the Sharks with the victory.

Junior keeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) made a pair of saves for the Lasers while senior goalie Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) stopped two shots to earn the win for Simmons.

Lasell hosts New England College on Tuesday, October 4 at 4:00 p.m. while the Sharks will be in action on the say day when they host Colby-Sawyer College at Daly Field for a 7:00 p.m. start.
