Lasers Fall Short in OT at St. Joe's Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (9/23/16) – The Lasell field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on a cloud Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

Freshman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored twice to help lift St. Joe's to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Lasell drops to 6-3 this season and 1-1 in the GNAC.

Pomerleau netted her sixth goal – and third game-winner in as many SJC victories – 4:24 into the extra play, as the freshman hustled to the left post, handled a thread-the-needle pass from junior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) that eluded the Lasell goalie, and tapped the ball into an empty cage for the dramatic finish.

Pomerleau put the Monks on the board in the 15th minute when she received a right-to-left cross from senior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) near the goalmouth and slammed her own rebound into the cage. The Lasers answered when junior Erica Connors (South Berwick, Maine) blasted a shot to the lower left sector of the cage, off a pass from freshman Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.), on a perfectly executed penalty corner with just 16 seconds left in the first half.

Saint Joseph's held a 20-3 shots advantage in the narrow victory but Lasell junior keeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) kept the scoring to a minimum with 13 stops, several of the highlight reel variety, in a losing effort.

Saint Joseph's sophomore goalie Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) posted one stop to pick up her third victory of the season

Saint Joseph's held a 13-4 lead in penalty corners in the conference triumph.

Lasell is off until next Thursday when the Lasers travel to Anna Maria College for a 5:00 PM conference contest. Saint Joseph's is back in action tomorrow when the Monks host Kean University at Deering Memorial Stadium in a non-conference match-up slated to begin at 6:00 PM.
