MIT Breaks Field Hockey's Undefeated Streak, 4-0

NEWTON, Mass. (9/15/16) -- The Lasell College field hockey team's season-opening, five-game winning streak came to a halt on Thursday afternoon after a 4-0 home loss to MIT at Grellier Field.

The Lasers fall to 5-1 on the season with the non-conference loss, while the Engineers' second straight win lifts them to 5-1.

Lasell junior goalkeeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) had a strong day in net despite the loss, making 17 saves, including ten in the second half. Freshman Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) had both shots on goal for the Lasers.

The Engineers scored two goals in each half to take the win. Sophomore Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) and senior Krishna Jaitly (Bethesda, Md.) gave MIT a 2-0 lead in just over 11 minutes, while junior Amanda Lowery (Encinitas, Calif.) scored both goals in the latter half of the game.

Just 6:04 into the contest, Tregoning's third goal of the season lifted the Engineers above the Lasers. Jaitly got credit for the assist off senior Tate DeWeese's (Towson, Md.) penalty corner.

Jaitly scored the next MIT goal herself at the 11:08 marker, picking up a loose rebound and lifting the ball high over Landry and into the back of the net. The goal was the senior captain's first of the year.

Lasell opened the second half strong with a shot on goal and two penalty corners in the first minute, but Lowery added a third Engineer score on a deflection shot at 47:22. Junior Emily Penn (Columbia, Md.) was credited for the assist.

Lowery and Penn connected again at 51:04, giving the Engineers a 4-0 lead. After Penn took a shot on goal, Lowery grabbed the rebound and snuck home her second goal of the day and season.

Penn, who took five shots on goal in the contest, also registered her 20th point of the season by assisting on Lowery's second goal. Tregoning and Jaitly each had six shots on net to lead MIT.

The Engineers had a 22-2 shots on goal advantage in the contest, while attempting 14 corners to Lasell's three. In the MIT net, Sophomore Cailey Talbot (Southampton, N.J.) stopped both shots on goal she faced en route to her second shutout.

The Lasers will host its third straight non-conference test when they host Elms on Saturday, September 17 at noon. The Engineers open up their NEWMAC schedule against Springfield College that same day at 1:00 p.m.
