Field Hockey Uses Second Half to Move Past Wheelock 3-1

NEWTON, Mass. (3/1/15)- Lasell College defeated Wheelock College 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey match up at Grellier Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Lasers jump to 5-5 overall while the Wildcats sink to 3-5.

Freshman Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) broke open the scoring just five minutes into the contest. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference rookie of the week sent a long shot in from just inside the arc to give Lasell a 1-0 lead.

With 10 minutes left to play in the first half, Wildcats sophomore Abbey Raymond (Salem, N.H.) split the Lasers' defense for the 1-1 equalizer. Lasell senior Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) fired back-to-back shots on goal just before the end of the first half, but Wheelock freshman Cassidy Smith (South Berwick, Maine) was there to prevent a 2-1 rise from the Lasers.

The game-winner came from freshman Julia Franzik (Wallingford, Conn.) ten minutes into the second half, as she collected the ball from Smith's save, and put the Lasers up 2-1. Senior Cristina Wilson (Wilmington, Mass.) took advantage of a Wheelock defensive scramble in front of the net with just two minutes left to go in regulation to give Lasell its goal of insurance.

The Lasers owned a 21-2 advantage in shots, and didn't allow a single penalty corner in the effort.

Sophomore netminder Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) improves to 5-5 overall, and recorded two saves on the day, as Smith stopped nine of 12 shots on goal for the Wildcats.

The Lasers jump back into GNAC action on Saturday, October 3, as they host Anna Maria College with a 12:00 p.m. start time. The Wildcats will hit the road for their next contest on Sunday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m.
