WPI Sneaks Past Field Hockey 2-1

WORCESTER – WPI Senior Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, Mass.) netted a pair of first half goal to lift WPI to a 2-1 victory over visiting Lasell in a non-conference field hockey contest played Tuesday night. With the result, the Lasers fall to 4-5 overall, while the Engineers improve to 3-5 on the season.

Mazzola dented the scoring column just 6:34 in when she collected a passed in the middle from Allie Buckley (Worcester, Mass.) and deposited a shot into the bottom right.  Lasell answer back and leveled the score at 1-1 as Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.), the GNAC's leading scorer, rushed up the right side and slipped a shot to the far post for her 10th goal of the season.

WPI went ahead for good at just 1:38 before the break as Mazzola collected her own rebound following a Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, Conn.) shot and registered her third goal of the season and 18th of her career.

From that point forward it was the two defenses that took center stage.  WPI's Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass.) was credited with two stops in the second half while Lasell's Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.), the reigning GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week, recorded 11 of her 15 saves after the intermission.

For the game, the host held a 22-5 bulge in shots and attempted six of the night's nine penalty corners.

WPI plays the third match of a four game homestand on Saturday morning, hosting nationally-ranked Babson at 11am, while Lasell kicks off three in a row at home on Thursday, entertaining Wheelock at 4pm.
