Braman Scores Two to Steer Field Hockey Past JWU 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (9/12/15) – The Lasell College field hockey team is 1-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play after junior Courtney Braman (Gardner, Mass.) scored twice to give the Lasers a 3-1 victory against Johnson and Wales. Lasell improves to 1-2 on the year (1-0 GNAC), while JWU drops to 1-2 (0-1 GNAC).

The Wildcats were first to get on the board, as Giovanna Ciavardoni slipped a goal in 12:57 into the contest. After the remainder of what was a scoreless stint for the visitors, Lasell came out after the break to score just 35 seconds into the second half. Braman registered her first of two goals at 35:35, just before senior Christina Wilson (Wilmington, Mass.) found the back of the cage after a scramble in JWU's defensive zone.

At 43:45, Lasell lined up to take a corner, where freshman Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) found Braman for the 3-1 lead. With momentum on their side, the Lasers remained composed and aggressive, firing off seven shots before JWU struck once more. At 64:34, Wildcat Katrina Brunette cracked a rebound off the pipe (Ciavardoni) to cut the score 3-2.

In a final attempt to even out at three, Shaina Tompson threatened a Wildcat goal, but was denied the equalizer as Lasell sophomore keeper Denise Landry (New Mildford, Conn.) came up with the save.

Landry (1-2) had six saves on the day, while JWU's Claire Nolan (0-1) stopped 12 of 15 goals faced on net. JWU outshot the Lasers 20-17, while Lasell held a 10-5 advantage in corners.

Lasell jumps back into non-conference action on Tuesday, September 15 as they head to Wheaton College at 7:00 p.m., while JWU visits Westfield State on Wednesday, September 16 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
