Lasell Powers Past Mount Ida 4-2 on Field Hockey Day

NEWTON, Mass. (10/18/14) – The Lasell College field hockey team continued their push for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference playoff spot with a 4-2 conference victory over Mount Ida College on Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field. The win moved Lasell to 5-9 on the year and 2-3 in league play, while the Mustangs dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in GNAC games.

Nikita Soares scored a pair of goals for Lasell, Ashley Gleason scored a goal and assisted on another, Courtney Braman chipped in a goal for the Lasers and Taylor Hulitzky added a pair of assists. Taylor Sheehan made four saves in the contest to earn the win as she moved to 1-1 in goal on the year.

Lauren Kelley and Lexi Minicucci each scored for Mount Ida and Molly Thompson chipped in with an assist in the game. Brenna Santos made 16 saves in a losing effort in goal, helping keep the Mustangs within striking distance.

Lasell got on the board early in the game as Soares converted a transition feed from Hulitzky in the 9th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Ida tied the score at 1-1 when Lauren Kelly capitalized on a Molly Thompson pass off a penalty corner in the 28th minute, send the two teams to halftime all square.

Hulitzky set up a Braman goal for Lasell in the 44th minute to put the hosts ahead 2-1, but Mount Ida came right back tying the score at 2-2 on an unassisted goal by Minicucci in the 50th minute. Lasell continued to pepper the Mustangs net and that persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Ashley Gleason grabbed a rebound and knocked home a Lasell goal to make it 3-2 and the Lasers put the game away when Gleason found Soares with just under 30 seconds to play to make it a 4-0 final score.

Mount Ida will be back in action on Saturday October 25th when they host Johnson and Wales while head to Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday October 22nd for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
