Field Hockey Clipped 4-3 on Late Overtime Goal by Wheaton

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell College Field Hockey dropped a non-conference overtime match to visiting Wheaton College, 4-3 on a goal by freshmen Kelsey Buckley knocked home the game winner with just over a minute to play. Lasell dropped to 1-3 while Wheaton climbed to 4-1 for the season.

The Lasers were led offensively by Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass.) who tallied a pair of goals and ten shots on goal in the match. Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.) recorded a goal, an assist and five shots, two on goal in the loss. Freshmen goal keeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) made ten saves for the Lasers this afternoon.

Wheaton was paced by Buckley and Michelle Trainor (Amesbury, Mass.) who each scored for the Lyons, while Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) recorded six shots in the victory and added her own goal for the visitors. Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H.) led the Lyons with an assist and seven shots (three on goal) this afternoon. 

The Lasers opened the scoring at 16:49 of the first half when Soares fed the ball to Gleason, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. This pair would hook up again at 30:12 when Soares scored the second tally of the game on a breakaway from Gleason to take a 2-0 lead going into the half. 

Two minutes into the second period, Wheaton junior Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass.) converted on a nice feed from sophomore Darci Bruce (Walpole, Mass.) to cut the lead within one, 2-1 in favor of the Lasers. Soares answered the Lyons with her second goal of the game coming at 60:53, extending their lead to 3-1. Trailing, with less than ten minutes to play in the game, Trainor found the back of the net to cut the Lasers lead to within one, 3-2.

Peters would knot the score at 3-3 for the Lyons at 68:15, after a penalty corner set up the assist from Gage, one minute earlier. After a fight for possession in front of the net, Buckley received the ball from senior co-captain Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) netting her second goal of the 2014 season, giving the Lyons a 4-3 overtime victory.

Lasell College returns to action on Saturday, September 13 when they host Regis College (Mass.) at 12:00 p.m. Wheaton College returns home to face off against Colby Sawyer College at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
