Field Hockey Drops Wheelock 8-3 in Non-League Action

NEWTON, Mass. (9/3/14) – The Lasell College women's field hockey team picked up their first win of the season by knocking off Wheelock 8-3 on Wednesday afternoon. Lasell improved to 1-1 on the season while the Wildcats slipped to 0-2 for the 2014 campaign.

Nilita Soares (Westport, Mass.) netted a hat-trick with three goals, also adding an assist while Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) added a pair of goals for Lasell. Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.) scored once and added an assist and Taylor Hulitzky (Medway, Mass.) and Danielle Hottin (N. Branford, Conn.) each added a scoring tally as well. Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) earned the win in the cage for Lasell, holding Wheelock scoreless in the opening half before giving way to Brianna Kulvete (Templeton, Mass.) who made on save in the second half.

Katelyn Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored twice for Wheelock and Emma Panto (Somers, Conn.) tallied a goal for the Wildcats as well in the contest. Nicole Miranda (Westbrook, Maine) took the loss in goal, making eight saves in the contest.

Lasell took an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Ashlee Pechulis just 50 seconds into the game, then using goals by Gleason, Hulitzky and Soares to take a 4-0 lead into the intermission. Lasell held a 14-0 edge in shots in the opening half, as well as a 5-1 lead on penalty corners.

Soares added two more in the second half, Danielle Hottin scored her first goal of the season, and Pechulis struck again in the 51st minute to give Lasell an 8-0 lead. Wheelock answered with three goals to close the game, as Frade scored from the run of play then scored on a penalty stroke a couple of minutes later to make it 8-2 with just under 14 minutes on the clock. Panti scored an unassisted goal in the 58th minute, but Lasell would allow the visitors no closer, capturing the 8-3 result.

Wheelock will host the University of Maine at Farmington on Sunday September 7th at 1:00 p.m. while Lasell will be back in action on Saturday September 6th when they travel to Eastern Connecticut for a 12:00 p.m. start.
