Field Hockey Defeats Becker 4-0

NEWTON, Mass. (10/1/13) – The Lasell College women's field hockey team defeated visiting Becker College 4-0 at Grellier Field. The Lasers evened their record at 5-5 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 0-11 for the season.

Four different players found their way into the scoring column for Lasell, with Ainslee Thompson (Allendale, N.J.), Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass.) and Samantha Smithers (Yarmouth, Mass.) each netting unassisted goals and Kristine Jackson (Medway, Mass.) tallying on a penalty stroke. Taylor Sheehan (Brewster, Mass.) made three saves in the cage for Lasell to earn the victory.

Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.) stopped 20 shots on the afternoon for Becker, keeping the contest close much of the way with her outstanding performance. Katherine DiMascio (Braintree, Mass.) recorded a pair of defensive saves as well for the Hawks, stopping a couple of back post chances from widening the margin.

Ainslee Thompson opened the scoring for Lasell in the 17th minute, finding space just inside the top of the circle following a restart and driving a hard shot past Gallo to give Lasell a 1-0 lead. A scramble in front of the net with just over three minutes to play in the first half led to a Lasell penalty stroke, which Jackson coolly buried to put the Lasers on top 2-0 heading into the half.

Nikita Soares scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 57th minute to push the Lasers lead to 3-0 and Samantha Smithers capped the scoring with her second goal of the year in the 69th minute sending Lasell to the 4-0 victory.

Becker will travel to Framingham State on Thursday October 3rd for a 4:00 p.m. tilt with the Rams while Lasell will look to earn their first North Atlantic Conference victory of the season when they visit New England College on Saturday October 5th at 5:30 p.m.
