Field Hockey Knocks Off Wheaton, 3-2

NORTON, Mass. (9/11/13) - The Lasell College field hockey team bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday afternoon to defeat Wheaton College (Mass.) 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Lasers moved to 2-2 on the season with the victory, while the Lyons dropped to 3-2 for the year.

Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass.) scored a pair of unassisted goals for Lasell, and Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn.) tallied as well to account for Lasell's three goals. Taylor Sheehan (Brewster, Mass.) made a career-high 13 saves including nine in the second half to help Lasell claim the victory.

Michelle Trainor (Amesbury, Mass.) and Sarah McNicholas (Boxboro, Mass.) each found the back of the cage for Wheaton, and Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.) made eight saves while taking the loss.

Soares opened the scoring for Lasell in the 19th minute when she pulled a rebound out of a scrum in front of the net and found a space to squeeze in her shot, putting Lasell in front 1-0. Gleason made it 2-0 in favor of Lasell in the 23rd minute when her blast from 10 yards out beat Massengill, and Lasell carried their two goal advantage into the half.

Trainor quickly pulled Wheaton within a goal at 2-1 when she beat a defender off a penalty corner and sent her shot into the goal just under three minutes into the second half. Lasell pushed their lead back to two goals when Soares collected her own rebound and notched her second goal of the contest in the 42nd minute. Less than a minute later, Wheaton's McNichols five-hole finish made it 3-2 and set the stage for a tightly contested final 27 minutes of action.

Sheehan made five saves the rest of the way in the second half to preserve the Lasers lead and help them to their second win of the season.

Lasell will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Regis College for a 12:00 p.m. tilt.
