Women's Field Hockey Falls to WPI 3-1 in Season Opener

The Lasell College field hockey team gave up a pair of second half goals, falling 3-1 to the visiting Engineers of WPI. Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass.) scored the first goal of her Lasell career to draw the hosts even at the half, following a tally by Caroline Mazzolla (Harvard, Mass.) seven minutes into the contest which put WPI up 1-0.

The Lasers started slowly, but seemed to come alive after the Mazzolla goal gave WPI an early 1-0 lead. Freshmen goalkeeper Cassie Aviles (Bellingham, Mass.) put tigether a strong collegiate debut, stopping 10 shots in total and 7 in the opening stanza to keep Lasell in the game.

Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, Md.) put WPI back on top three minutes into the second half, scoring on a feed from Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MAss.) and the visitors extended their lead to 3-1 five minutes later when Richardson scored a goal of her own finishing a penalty corner past the Lasers goalie.

WPI used a 21-12 lead in shots and an 11-4 edge penalty corners to pick up a win in the season opener for both teams. 

Liz Dufresne (Worcester, Mass.) finished with six saves to earn the win in goal for WPI, while Aviles took the loss for Lasell, despite several spectacular saves on the day.

WPI will return to action on Tuesday September 4th at 7pm, when they host Bridgewater State College. Lasell will take on MIT next, facing off with the Engineers at 4pm on the Lasell College turf at Grellier Field.
