Becker Comes Up Big in Second Half to Top Lasell Field Hockey

NEWTON, MA--  Behind two goals by freshman midfielder Katherine DiMascio (Braintree, MA), Becker College field hockey defeated Lasell College, 3-1, on Grellier Field in non-league play on Wednesday.

The Hawks better their record to 3-7 overall while the Lasers slide to 2-7 with the loss.

DiMascio put the visitors ahead unassisted after 30 minutes of scoreless play when she rounded up a diverted shot by teammate Stephanie Dixon (Rockport, MA).  The score came off only the third shot of the game for the Hawks, their opening attempt not taking place until the 26th minute.

Lasell took a crack at the net only four times in the first half, however, three of those endeavors were on-target, forcing Becker's keeper Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, NJ) to stave off each chance.  Lasell's goalie Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) turned away one shot in the period.

Freshman forward Lauren Rice (Belfast, ME) brought the score to a draw just 1:52 into the second half. The play began in Lasell's back-field when Ainsley Wolfe (Derry, NH) picked off a pass from Becker's offense and sent the ball up the sideline to Taylor Hultizky (Fairfield, CT).  Hulitzky's crack at the net was fended off but Rice was there to get the second chance and score the goal.

The tie would hold just a short six minutes as DiMascio found the back of the box once again in the 43rd minute.  The game-changer was tipped in by DiMascio after Victoria Sirachia (Goshen, CT) ripped a high shot from the top of the circle.  Dixon added on the fourth marker of the game, taking help from Brooke Cote (Fitchburg, MA) down the stretch.

Dilkes earned four saves with her third victory of the year while Thornton stopped two shots in the setback.

In their next contest, Castleton State will travel to Lasell on Saturday, October 1st, for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup at 1:00 p.m. on Grellier Field.
