Newton, Mass.- The Becker College Hawks came to Lasell College today for a non-conference field hockey game defeating the Lasers, 2-1, on Grellier Field.
Sara Jannuzzi (Glen, NH) put the Lasers ahead first when she scored just 6:27 into the first period. Lasell was granted a penalty corner which Jannuzzi passed off to Tia Pratt (S. Paris, ME) at the top of the arc. Pratt attempted a shot; however, it was Jannuzzi that tipped in the ball for the go-ahead goal.
Lasell may have put more distance between themselves and the visitors, but Carolyn Mueller (Glen Ridge, NJ) repressed a shot taken by Lasell's freshman Natasha Wood (White River, VT) with a defensive save. Heading into the intermission, Lasell remained in control of the board with a 1-0 lead.
Just before the 43rd minute, Becker's Nicole Lijana (Moorestown, NJ) was awarded a penalty stroke, which she knocked just wide of Christine Thornton (Canton, Mass.) in the Lasers net, equalizing the score.
The Hawks then moved ahead with a play that began with just seven minutes left in regulation. Morgan Gass (Avon, Conn.) took off on a breakaway down the field carrying the ball to the corner before passing off to Jennifer Ouellette (Merrimack, NH) in the middle of the field. Ouellette took a long shot from just outside the 16-yard marking, but Gass was waiting by the net to dump in the game-winner.
Thornton made seven saves while protecting the Lasers net.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-7 overall while the Lasers fall to 4-7.
Lasell has a week break before heading to Eastern Connecticut State University on October 13th for a 3:30 p.m. game.
