Mike Smith will join the Lasers in the 2015 baseball season after competing professionally for 14 years. Smith was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 5th round of the 2000 amateur draft at the end of his college career at the University of Richmond. He made his Major League debut on April 26th, 2002 and went on to play in Major League games for the Blue Jays and the Minnesota Twins. He played seven seasons in AAA with the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, and St. Louis Cardinals organizations. In between seasons he played winter ball in Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. In 2009, he left the York Revolution of the Atlantic League to play in Asia for the Brother Elephants of Taiwan’s  Chinese Professional Baseball League. He pitched his next two seasons for the Can-Am League’s Brockton Rox in Brockton, Massachusetts. In 2010 he led the League in wins and ERA, going 12-3 with a 2.87 ERA in 125.1 innings and collecting 108 strikeouts. He was named the Can-Am League’s 2010 “Star of Stars” and was selected to both the Can-Am All Star Team and First Team All Independent League 2010. In 2011 he took on the responsibilities of Pitching Coach in addition to being a player. He continued his double duty when he went to Italy to coach and play for Grosseto in the Italian Baseball League in 2012.
