BSB: Lasers Split Monday Doubleheader with USJ

Waltham, MA – The Lasell University baseball team split a GNAC doubleheader with the University of Saint Joseph's (CT) Blue Jays on Monday night, 13-3 and 5-3. The split puts Lasell at 21-12 overall and 10-3 in conference while the Blue Jays move to 14-18 overall and 6-7 in conference.

Game 1

Game one of this doubleheader was all Lasers as their offense took over. A wild pitch with runners on second and third would score the first laser run in the first inning. Lasell would load the bases in the second inning and CJ Mills would single to left field to bring in another run. Directly after him a Tim Callahan sacrifice fly would give the Lasers a 3-0 lead.

Two more runs would come across in the third inning after Bryan Baumann blasted his second home run of the season. A walk and hit by pitch to start the fourth inning gave Scott Lyon the opportunity to extend the lead and he did just that, singling in Mills to give the Lasers a 6-0 advantage.

USJ would get on the board in the fifth, cutting the Lasell lead in half as Dom Scalia blasted a three-run home run to left center. The Lasers would get those runs back quickly in the bottom of the sixth as Mills led the inning off with a double, Callahan followed him with a single and a walk drawn by Connor Freitas loaded the bases. Lyon would then double in two runs. The next batter, Brad Edwards, would hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another run and Lyon would then score on a passed ball.

The Lasers made it 10-3 with an RBI single from Callahan in the seventh and in the eighth they would score two more. Back-to-back RBI singles from Chris Bulk and Jared Whitby would enforce the mercy rule and end the game as the Lasers won 13-3.

Adam Marsh (5-0) would earn the victory for the Lasers throwing six innings, allowing six hits and three runs while walking five and striking out seven.

Offensively, Lyon doubled, singled, and drove in three runs. Baumann homered, singled, and drove in two runs, and Callahan singled twice and drove in two runs as well. Mills doubled and singled and Edwards also doubled. Bulk added three singles and Ross Audet and Whitby also added singles.

Game 2

USJ got on the board first in game two as Scalia hit a sacrifice fly to left field to take an early 1-0 lead. Lasell would fire back in the bottom half and take the lead back as Baumann laced a two-run single to left field. Lasell would extend their lead in the bottom of the second as a Callahan brought in Whitby on a groundball to second base and give the Lasers a 3-1 lead.

The Blue Jays cut the deficit to one in the fifth inning as a wild pitch would bring in a run. In the seventh inning a double off the bat of Ryan Shaw would score another run and two batters later, Ethan Reemsnyder also doubled to take the lead, 4-3. Another Blue Jay run would come across in the eighth as Shaw grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to bring in a run. That would be the final run as the Lasers couldn't muster anything in the final two innings, giving USJ the 5-3 win.

Zachary Simone started for the Lasers, tossing six innings allowing just two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four. Ethan Bernardo (1-4) earned the loss for the Lasers.

Offensively, Baumann doubled, singled, and drove in two runs. Mills and Freitas each doubled and Callahan, Audet and Whitby all singled.

Up Next: The Lasers are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Standish, Maine for another GNAC battle with St. Joe's (ME). First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
