BSB: Lasers drop conference matchup to Monks

Lynn, Mass. – Lasell University Lasers baseball team came up just short in a conference match up against St. Joseph's College of Maine Monks baseball team, 8-6 and 5-3, Saturday at Fraser Field.

The matchup moves Lasell to 4-12 overall and 3-3 in the GNAC while St. Joseph's moves too 11-9 overall and 2-0 in conference.

The Lasers will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Albertus Magnus for the second time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. and the second game is slated to start at 12:30 P.M.

Game 1 – Lasell 6 St. Joseph's Maine 8

The Monks got the scoring started in the top of the second when junior Ronan Chisholm (North Catham, Mass.) beat the third baseman to the bag with two out that allowed sophomore Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) to score.

Lasell answered right back in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Ross Audet (Swansea, Mass.) ripped a two RBI double into left center. Senior Mario Kiaunis (West Haven, Conn.) brought home the third run of the inning with an RBI ground out.

The Lasers added two more in the third inning on a two RBI double off the bat of senior Charlie Danaher (Guilford, Conn.).

Senior Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) brought home another run for Lasell in the fourth when he singled through the right side to score Kiaunis bring the lead to five.

St. Joseph's were able to get one back in the fifth inning when senior Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine) scored on a wild pitch.

The Monks found their bats in the sixth inning first scoring a run when freshman Dawson Gundlah (York, Maine) brought home a run on a bases loaded walk. Senior Dylan Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.) added a second on a sacrifice fly. The game became deadlocked at six after a two RBI double by graduate student Ben Gavel (Rochester, N.H). St. Joseph's capped off a six run sixth with a double by both graduate student Drew Healey (Rochester, N.H) and freshman Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.). This was enough for the Monks to capture victory in game one.

Junior Matt Poff (Pelham, N.H.) got the victory for the Monks and senior Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up the save. Danaher went three for three on the day including two RBIs and Doris picked up two RBIs as well.

Game 2 – Lasell St. Joseph's Maine

The Monks opened up the scoring again in inning two on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jonathan Dube (Rochester, N.H) scoring Stephens.

Lasell answered right back in the bottom of the inning on a single by senior Harrison Silva (Lowell, Mass.) bringing home Audet to even the game.

Junior Matt Motyka (Vernon, Conn.) ripped a double down the left field line that brought home Kiaunis and gave the Lasers the lead. Audet added a second run to the Laser lead when he lined a ball back up the middle bringing home Danaher.

The Monks had an answer to Lasell taking the lead. Healey started the scoring for the Monks in the fourth with an RBI double. Stephens followed him up with his own double to score Healey. Senior Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) gave St. Joseph's the lead on an RBI single to right field scoring Stephens.

St. Joseph's added one more in the fifth inning when Gundlah double home a run to give the Monks a two-run cushion. The Monks finished the game out without letting up another run to win game two.

Stephens got the win for St. Joseph's and Marchia got his second save of the day. Motyka went three for four on the day including an RBI, while Audet and Silva both went two for three with an RBI each. Sophomore Jay Giangrande (Andover, Mass.) threw three strong innings giving up four hits while striking out five.
