BB: Billy Uberti named new head coach for Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell College athletic department has announced that Billy Uberti has been named head baseball coach, effective immediately.

A 2014 Lasell graduate, Uberti is a former four-year player, two-year co-captain and three-year assistant coach for the Lasers. He also has collegiate coaching experience as a graduate assistant coach at Suffolk University in 2018, and he spent the 2019 season as an assistant coach at East Georgia State College. Uberti takes over for former head coach Greg Harjula, who stepped down last month after nine seasons at Lasell.

"We are extremely happy to welcome Billy back to his roots as our new head baseball coach," said director of athletics Kristy Walter. "We know Billy has a passion for baseball and a passion for Lasell, and we are confident that he will do an outstanding job for us. He has gained valuable experience in his previous coaching positions and we are looking forward to him building on the success that Lasell has enjoyed the past nine years under Coach Harjula."

A native of Newton, Mass., Uberti played for Lasell from 2011-14, serving as co-captain his junior and senior seasons and earning All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) post-season honors both years. He was a standout at the plate and on the mound, setting single-season school records in on-base percentage (.500) and earned run average (2.12) and ranking second all-time in doubles (36) and RBI (79).

Uberti was a Laser assistant coach for three seasons (2015-17) before joining GNAC rival Suffolk for one season (2018) while earning his Master's degree and then moving on to East Georgia State College in 2019. He was also an assistant coach for Martha's Vineyard in the Future's League, helping the Sharks to the 2018 league title, and he played professionally for the Breakthrough Bandits in Australia in 2014.

"I want to thank Kristy Walter and the rest of the athletic administration for giving me the opportunity to be the head baseball coach at my alma mater," said Uberti. "Being raised in Newton and attending Lasell has left me with passion in the city, the institution, and the program. We will be a hard working group that strives to get better every day in pursuit of championships. My goal is to bring the program that my mentor, Coach Harjula, has built to new heights. I am thrilled, honored, and humbled to be given this opportunity. This is truly a dream come true."
