BB: Lasell sweeps non-conference doubleheader from UMF

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Lasell College baseball team swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from the University of Maine Farmington Saturday afternoon on Senior Day, taking the opener 3-1 and winning the nightcap, 13-4, at Brandeis University's Stein Diamond.

The Lasers improve to 22-15, establishing a new program record for victories in a season. The previous mark in the 11-year history of the program was 21 wins in 2011 (21-15) and 2016 (2017). UMF falls to 10-21.

The Lasers recognized its 10 seniors prior to the second game. They include Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.), Zach Herring (Fresno, Calif.), David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Brian Cohen (Rockland, Mass.), Justin Webb (San Diego, Calif.), Dan Petr (East Haven, Conn.), Chris Maringo (Farmingville, N.Y.), Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.), Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.), and Rob Cutone (Tewksbury,  Mass.).

Lasell turns its attention to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs, which begin on Tuesday, April 30. The fourth-seeded Lasers will host fifth-seeded Albertus Magnus College in a single-elimination game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Stein Diamond.

Game 1: Lasell 3, UMaine Farmington 1

Junior Lorenzo Davis (West Haven, Conn.) pitched a complete-game victory (1-2) for Lasell, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out two. The only run he allowed came in the first inning, when junior Chase Malloy (Madison, Maine) led off with a double and later scored on an infield ground out.

The Lasers tied the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Marchesseault. They tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Maringo.

Marchesseault and Sherron had two hits each for Lasell. Malloy had two hits for the Beavers.

 Game 2: Lasell 13, UMaine Farmington 4

The Lasers scored at least one run in all six innings that they batted, with the big innings being a five-run third and a four-run fifth.

Sherron hit a solo home run in the second inning to put Lasell ahead for good, 2-1, and the four runs in the third came home via a bunt by junior Joe Sullivan (East Sandwich, Mass.), a sacrifice fly by freshman Matt Bischof (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.), a double by Herring and a Farmington error.

Marsell keyed the fifth inning rally with a two-run home run, and Herring rounded out the scoring with a sixth inning sac fly.

Marchesseault and Sullivan finished with three hits each, with Sullivan driving in three. MIchalek and Marsell had two hits apiece.

Lasell used five pitchers in the game, with Webb earning the win (2-0) in relief, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings and striking out two.
