BB: Lasell falls to Lesley in non-conference game

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Senior Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, N.J.) had three hits and senior Matt Bavaro (Sayville, N.Y.) drove in three runs Thursday afternoon as Lesley University defeated Lasell College, 8-3, in non-conference baseball action at the New England Baseball Complex.

Sophomore Wyatt Sihvonen (Vernon, Conn.) provided the highlights for the Lasers with a pair of solo home runs, his first two of the season. Senior Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) also had two hits and drove in a run.

Lesley improves to 8-22 on the season, while Lasell drops to 20-15.

The Lynx got on the board first with a run in the second inning as senior Jacob Cervantes (Ventura, Calif.) doubled to center and came home on a single by junior Will Rhone (North Haven, Conn.). Lasell came right back in the third with a run on a Michalek RBI single, but Lesley pulled ahead in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out, bases-loaded single down the left field line by Cervantes.

Sihvonen cut the margin to 3-2 when he led off the fifth with a solo shot to left, but Lesley pulled away with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Senior Ryan Pumphret (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Ian Spillane (Chula Vista, Calif.) singled to start the seventh-inning rally; Bavaro cracked a two-run double to right center and Ferragine followed with an RBI single to center. Bavaro drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, and junior Brendan Fairchild (Temecula, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to left.

Sihvonen went deep again to start the ninth inning and two batters reached base on walks, but the Lasers could not push any more runs across.

Freshman David Albuquerque (Atlanta, Ga.) earned the win (1-1) for Lesley, allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings, striking out one. Sophomore Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) worked six innings for Lasell, surrendering three runs on nine hits and four walks, and took the loss.

Lasell returns home for the Senior Day games this Saturday, April 27, with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Maine Farmington at Brandeis University, beginning at 4 p.m. Lesley plays a New England Collegiate Conference twin bill Saturday at Newbury College, beginning at 2 p.m.
