Two Lasell student-athletes earn GNAC weekly honors

NEWTON, Mass. – Two Lasell College student-athletes were honored Monday by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for their performances in the Laser sports action last week.

Senior David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baker) was named GNAC Baseball Player of the Week, and freshman James Anderson (Medway, Mass./Medway) was selected both GNAC Men's Lacrosse Player and Rookie of the Week. Marsell was recognized by the GNAC for the first time this spring, while Anderson was named Rookie of the Week for the third time.

A second baseman and starting pitcher, Marsell hit safely in all four games for Lasell in a 2-2 week, collecting three hits in three of the four games. For the week, he batted .625 (10-for-16) with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. He was 3-for-4 and 1-for-4 with an RBI in each game Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Rivier University, and went 3-for-4 in both ends of a doubleheader loss Sunday to Suffolk University. Marsell reached a personal milestone in the sweep of Rivier by recording his 100th career hit for the Lasers.

Marsell also pitched 7.2 innings at Suffolk on Sunday, allowing just three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out two before losing the game in extra innings.

Marsell leads the Lasers and ranks 11th in the GNAC with a .362 batting average, and tops the team with 29 hits on the season. He also leads the Lasers with seven starts on the mound, posting a 3-3 record with three complete games and a 2.57 earned run average, fourth-best in the GNAC and second-best among Laser starters.

A freshman attackman, Anderson tallied four goals and one assist in Lasell's only game, an 11-9 non-conference win over Gordon. He had three goals and an assist in the fourth quarter as the Lasers overcame a 9-6 deficit to pull out the win. He started the comeback with a goal with 13:37 remaining, then set up the tying goal with 9:33 remaining. Anderson notched the game-winner with 7:52 to play and added an insurance goal in the closing seconds. He also picked up four ground balls in the win.

Anderson is third on the team with 19 goals this season, and fourth with 27 points. The rookie also ranks 18th in the GNAC in goals scored and 21st in points. Anderson was previously the GNAC Rookie of the Week on March 18 and March 25.

Additionally, Lasell has earned the GNAC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week honor five straight weeks and six of the seven weeks of the season, with four different Lasers earning the honor.
