BB: Lasell falls to Gordon in non-conference affair

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Joe Pedulla (Monroe Township, N.J.) allowed just one earned run over seven innings, striking out eight, as Gordon College defeated Lasell College, 9-4, in non-conference college baseball action at Brandeis University's Stein Diamond.

The Fighting Scots improve to 3-18 overall while the Lasers drop to 12-8.

Senior Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior Joe Sullivan (East Sandwich, Mass.) had two hits apiece to lead Lasell, and freshman Matt Motyka (Vernon, Conn.) drove in two. Juniors John Lagerfeldt Stratford, Conn.) and Joseph Mack (East Longmeadow, Mass.) had two hits and two RBI for the visitors, and classmate Matt Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) also drove in a pair.

The Scots jumped on top 4-0 with three runs in the second inning and one in the third. Mack had an RBI single in the second and two more runs came home on an error and a passed ball. Senior Alex Willey (San Diego, Calif.) drove  in another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.

The Lasers got three runs back in the bottom of the third. Sullivan cracked an RBI double to left and two more runs came home on a throwing error.

Gordon put up five runs in the sixth inning to pull away. Mack drove in the first run with a bunt single, Paulsen added a two-run single to left, and Lagerfeldt capped the rally with a two-run triple to right center. Lasell added a final run in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman Matt Bischof (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.).

Pedulla went seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out eight to earn his first win (1-4). Freshman Mike Oley (Barkhamsted, Conn.) gave up just one hit in two scoreless innings to preserve the win. Sophomore Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) started and pitched three innings for the Lasers and took the loss (1-1), one of six Laser pitchers to take the mound.

Lasell returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Thursday with a make-up doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College on Maine, beginning at 3 p.m. Gordon takes on Anna Maria College on Wednesday, April 3, in Northborough, Mass., at 3 p.m.
