BB: Lasell falls to Fitchburg State

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Fitchburg State University pitchers combined to allow just one hit Tuesday afternoon as the Falcons defeated the Lasers of Lasell College, 5-2, in non-conference baseball action at Brandeis University's Stein Diamond.

Senior Adam Somers (Framingham, Mass.) earned the win (1-0) for the Falcons, pitching the first five innings and giving up one run without allowing a hit. Junior Evan Meleedy (Lakeville, Mass.) worked two innings, surrendering one run on one hit, and sophomore Lucas Amico (Leominster, Mass.) earned his second save with two perfect innings of relief.

The Falcons won their fourth game in their last five tries to improve to 9-5 overall, while the Lasers slide to 9-7 overall.

Sophomore Wyatt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn.) had Lasell's only hit with an RBI double in the seventh inning.

Fitchburg State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as senior Noah Milliard (Leominster, Mass.) and newcomer Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) hit RBI groundouts. The Falcons upped their margin in the third when junior Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) plated Cordeau with a sacrifice fly to right.

Lasell cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth with senior Chris Maringo (Farmingville, N.Y.) walked and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. The Lasers answered again in the bottom of the seventh as freshman Matt Motyka (Vernon, Conn.) and senior Rob Cutone (Tewksbury, Mass.) drew walks, and Sihvonen drove in a run with a double over the center fielder's head to cut the margon to 3-2.

Fitchburg State would secure the victory in the top of the ninth when sophomore Johan Asencio (Clinton, Mass.) scored on a failed pickoff attempt before Eramo laced a two-run double to left center to bring in Milliard and Ferrell.

Junior Lorenzo Davis (West Haven, Conn.) took the loss for Lasell (0-2), pitching five innings and allowing three runs on six hits, striking out three.

Lasell plays its fourth game in three days on Wednesday, March 27, with a visit to Curry College for a non-conference affair at 3:30 p.m. The Falcons will host the Buccaneers of Mass. Maritime Academy on Friday for a MASCAC matchup at the New England Baseball Complex, starting at 3:30 p.m.
