BB: Lasell falls to Edgewood in Florida finale

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Lasell College baseball team wrapped up the Spring Break trip to Florida Saturday morning with an 9-8 loss to Edgewood College in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park.

Lasell winds up the trip with a 5-4 record in its nine games in the Sunshine State, moving to 7-4 overall. Edgewood recorded its first win of the season (1-2).

Edgewood pulled out the victory in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by junior Max Orput (Rockford, Ill.), who brought home senior Dane Lamont (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.), who had led off with a walk and advanced to third on a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt.

Lasell jumped on top with four runs in the first inning on just one hit, as three Lasers were hit by a pitch, one walked and one reached on an error before a single by freshman Drew Szafranski (Cumberland, R.I.). The Lasers extended the lead to 5-0 with a run in the second without a hit, as senior Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.), walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Harrison Silva (Lowell, Mass.).

The Eagles battled back to tie the game at 5-5 with three runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third. Lasell regained the lead with two runs in the sixth inning, keyed by an RBI single by senior Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.), but Edgewood rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 8-7 lead.

The Lasers tied the score at 8-all in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by sophomore Wyatt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn.), but Edgewood pulled out the win in the bottom of the ninth.

Lasell used five pitchers in the game. Junior Chris O'Connor (Duxbury, Mass.) had an effective four-inning stint in relief, allowing no runs and just three hits, striking out one.

The Lasers return to New England where they will be the home team the next five games. The next game, Tuesday, March 19, against Emerson College has been moved to Malden Catholic High School, beginning at 8 p.m.
