Lasell Baseball wraps up GNAC regular season with split vs. Albertus Magnus

NEWTON, Mass. – Four Lasell College pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout Saturday afternoon on Senior Day as the Lasers defeated Albertus Magnus College 7-0 in the nightcap to complete a split of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader at Stein Field. The Falcons hit a pair of home runs to win the first game, 6-2.

The Lasers wind up the GNAC portion of the season with a 7-7 record (9-19 overall), while the Falcons move to 4-10 in the conference, 8-21 overall. Lasell ends the day in fourth place in the GNAC, and will learn its GNAC Tournament seed after all GNAC games are completed on Monday, April 30. The GNAC Tournament begins on Tuesday, May 1.

The day began with Lasell honoring its two graduating seniors, first baseman Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) and shortstop Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.).

Game 1 – Albertus Magnus 6, Lasell 2

The Falcons pulled away to a 4-0 lead with one run in the first inning, two in the third and three in the fourth. Lasell put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth but Albertus Magnus tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Sophomore Matt Warren (Wolcott, Conn.) homered for AMC in the first inning to open the scoring. Junior Tyriq Harris (Waterbury, Conn.) hit an RBI single to highlight a two-run rally in the third, and sophomore Christian Bradley (Stratford, Conn.) belted a lead-off homer in the fourth to give the visitors a four-run lead.

Lasell plated its two runs in the fourth inning as junior Rob Cutone (Tewksbury, Mass.) led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball, and junior Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior Chris Maringo (Farmingville, N.Y.) hit doubles to score the second run. The Falcons clinched the win in the seventh when junior Justen Rodriguez (Waterbury, Conn.) doubled and scored on a Lasell error, and Warren hit a sacrifice fly.

Junior Steven Berry (Lynbrook, N.Y.) pitched five innings to earn the win for AMC, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Sophomore Zach Handzel (Palmer, Mass.) went five innings for Lasell and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits, striking out six, but took the loss.

Game 2 – Lasell 7, Albertus Magnus 0

Freshman Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) started and pitched the first four innings to earn the win for Lasell, allowing just one hit and one walk. Freshman Zak Phillips (West Boylston, Mass.), sophomore Mike Tacinelli (Seymour, Conn.)  and junior Justin Webb (San Diego, Calif.) all pitched one scoreless inning of relief, with Tacinelli and Webb each striking out two.

The Lasers scored all of the runs they would need with five in the second inning. Sophomore Luke Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.), junior David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and freshman Wyatt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn.) hit RBI singles, and Marchesseault capped the rally with a two-run double. Junior Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) added an RBI double in the sixth inning.
