Lasell Baseball posts non-conference win over Dean

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Patrick Madden (Mashpee, Mass.) allowed just one unearned run on one hit and four walks over seven innings Tuesday evening to lead Lasell College to a 3-1 victory over Dean College in a non-conference baseball game at Stein Field.

Madden struck out four batters to post his first win of the season (1-1) for Lasell. The only hit he allowed was a third-inning double to freshman Matt Callahan (Attleboro, Mass.) and Callahan came around to score on an error and a wild pitch. Junior Justin Webb (San Diego, Calif.) came on to work the eighth inning for Lasell, allowing one hit and striking out two, and classmate Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his first save.

Lasell (8-18) got on the scoreboard with a run in the second inning when junior Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) walked, sophomore Joe Sullivan (East Sandwich, Mass.) and senior Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.) followed with singles to load the bases and freshman Wyatt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Sherron.

After Dean tied the score in the top of the third, Lasell took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Michalek singled, stole second and came around to score on a single by junior David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). The Lasers added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Michalek walked, stole second and scored on a single by junior Chris Maringo (Farmingville, N.Y.).

Freshman Gio Filippone (Darien, Conn.) gave up three runs on six hits and four walks for the Bulldogs (9-25-1), striking out eight batters, but took the loss (0-2).

Lasell's make-up game at Framingham State University on Wednesday, April 25, has been postponed due to scheduled rain. The Lasers will play at Stein Field again on Thursday, April 26, in a non-conference doubleheader against Pine Manor, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Dean will host Newbury College on Thursday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
