Lasell Baseball trades victories with Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game five-hitter Sunday afternoon as Lasell College defeated Johnson & Wales University, 5-1, helping the Lasers earn a split of the Great Northeast Athletic (GNAC) baseball doubleheader at Scotts Miracle-Gro Complex.

The host Wildcats took the opener, 4-0, holding Lasell to just three hits. With the win in the nightcap, Lasell is now 5-15 overall and 4- 4 in the GNAC, while Johnson & Wales moves to 16-11 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Freshman Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) continued his hot-hitting for the Lasers, collecting two hits in each game. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight outings, with five multi-hit games in that span. The rookie southpaw also pitched a one-hit shutout Saturday over Norwich University with 12 strikeouts.

Game 1 – Johnson & Wales 4, Lasell 0

Senior Rich Marshall (Pawtucket, R.I.) allowed just three singles and two walks to Lasell while striking out nine to post the victory (2-1). The Lasers' best chance to score came in the fifth inning when junior Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and Doris led off with singles, but Sherron was erased at third on a fielder's choice, then Marshall picked Doris off second base and struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Junior Dan Petr (East Haven, Conn.) threw shutout baseball for Lasell for five innings, allowing just five hits, before the Wildcats scored all four runs in the sixth, including three unearned runs, to hand Petr the loss. Sophomore Vin Amalfitano (Massapequa, N.Y.) drove in the first run with a single to right; sophomore Colby Greenhalgh (Plainfield, Conn.) added a two-run double down the left field line; and sophomore Raimiel Rodriguez (Providence, R.I.) capped the scoring with another RBI double to left.

Game 2 – Lasell 5, Johnson & Wales 1

Marsell scattered five hits and two walks while striking out four to post the victory (1-1) for Lasell. He surrendered a first-inning run on a walk to Greenhalgh, a double by Rodriguez and a fielder's choice by senior Edison Mercado (Providence, R.I.) that scored Greenhalgh, but shut down the Wildcats the rest of the way.

Lasell scored one run in the first inning on a Wildcats throwing error, and took the lead for good in the second on an RBI single by freshman Harrison Silva (Lowell, Mass.) The Lasers added three insurance runs in the fifth inning when Doris doubled and later scored on a wild pitch and junior Chris Maringo (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Silva added RBI hits.
