Lasell Baseball falls to Wentworth

WALTHAM, Mass. – Wentworth rallied with four runs in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday evening and pulled out a 9-8 victory over Lasell College in a non-conference baseball game at Stein Field.

Lasell had rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. After Wentworth regained the advantage in the top of the eight, the Lasers pulled to within one run at 9-8 in the last of the eighth. Lasell had a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth to put the winning run at the plate, but Wentworth closed the door to seal the win.

Wentworth improves to 7-10 overall while Lasell slips to 3-12.

Junior Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) doubled home a run in the first inning to give Lasell an early lead. Wentworth took its first lead with two runs in the top of the second when junior Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.) led off with a triple, junior Andrew Elliott (Rockland, Mass.) followed with an RBI double, and freshman Tommy Madigan (Valley Falls, N.Y.) added a run-scoring single.

The teams traded runs in their next two at bats, as Lasell senior Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.) walked and came around to score on a pair of Wentworth errors and Leopard senior Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) singled, stole second and later scored on an infield grounder. The teams traded runs again in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth when Lasell freshman Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) singled and later scored on an infield groundout and Weninger hit an RBI single for Wentworth.

After the Leopard extended its lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.), Lasell regained the lead with a four-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. Tejero led off with a double and scored on a single by freshman Harrison Silva (Lowell, Mass.); junior Chris Maringo (Famingville, N.Y.) added an RBI single; Marchesseault knocked in a run with a fielder's choice; and senior Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) capped the rally with an RBI double.

Wentworth came right back with a four-run rally in the top of the eighth. Elliot drove in the first run with a single; senior Bryon Kucharski (East Haven, Conn.) followed with an RBI double; another run scored on a passed ball; and junior Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.) capped the rally with an RBI single.

Tejero got a run back for Lasell in the bottom of the eighth when he singled, stole second and went to third on an error, and scored on Silva's sacrifice fly, but that ended up as the final run of the game.

Freshman Nate McDonald (Durham, Conn.) picked up the win (1-0) in relief, and freshman Ricky Alexy (Newton, Mass.) notched his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth, striking out two.  Sophomore Patrick Colvin (Lenoxdale, Mass.) took the loss (0-1) in relief for Lasell.

Lasell will be home again on Thursday, hosting Emerson College at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
