Three Lasell Student-Athletes receive GNAC Weekly Honors

NEWTON, Mass. – Three Lasell College freshman student-athletes received Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Kellie Matthews (Walpole, Mass./ Falmouth H.S.) each earned their second Lacrosse Rookie of the Week nod this season, while Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) was named GNAC Baseball Rookie of the Week.

Fidalgo, who received the honor for the second consecutive week, notched five goals and three assists for eight points as the Lasers went 1-1 on the week. He contributed three goals and two assists in a 14-9 non-conference loss to Plymouth State, and he tallied two goals and one assist in the 13-5 GNAC victory vs. Johnson & Wales University.

Through eight games Fidalgo is third on the team with 22 points, split evenly with 11 goals and 11 assists. He has also picked up 18 groundballs, including two versus PSU.

Matthews tallied nine goals and four assists for 13 points as the Lasers went 3-0 on the week. She contributed three goals, two assists in non-conference action at Elms College. In GNAC play she added a season-best six goals and one assist in a 21-6 victory over Simmons.

Matthews, who's played in nine of the Lasers 11 games this season, has 31 points, fourth-best on the team, including 22 goals and nine assists. Starting in all nine of her games, she is third on the team with 26 draw controls.

Doris batted .500 (6-for-12) in a 3-2 week for Lasell Baseball, including a double, two runs and two RBI. He went 2-for-4 versus Newbury including a crucial single in the bottom of eighth to spark a six-run inning, sealing a 9-8 comeback non-conference win. Against Rivier Doris batted 1-for-2 at the plate in Game 1.  In the top of the third, Doris singled to right field, knocking in two enroute to a 9-2 conference win.

Taking the mound versus in Game 2 versus Rivier, Doris threw for five innings, striking out seven Raiders. Doris allowed on three hits, two runs( (one earned) en route to a 10-5 Lasell victory, notching his first collegiate win.

The Lasell men's lacrosse team (3-5; 3-0 GNAC) returns to Grellier Field for a two-game home stand starting on Wednesday, April 11, as the Lasers welcome Norwich University at 4:00 p.m. The Laser women's lacrosse squad (8-3; 4-2 GNAC) hosts Albertus Magnus on Tuesday, April 10 at 4:00 p.m. Lasell Baseball (3-11, 2-2 GNAC) returns to Stein Diamond on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference showdown with Wentworth.
