Lasell Baseball comes back to defeat Newbury for first win of season

NEWTON, Mass. – Lasell College scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday evening to pull out a 9-8 victory over Newbury College in the first home baseball game of the season at Brandeis University's chilly Stein Field.

The victory was Lasell's first of the season (1-9) while Newbury drops to 7-15.

Junior Rob Cutone (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit a pair of doubles to lead the Lasers, and junior Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) also had two hits apiece. Junior Andre Marchesseault (Cheshire, Conn.) clouted a two-run homer in the win.

Lasell was forced to come from behind after Newbury put up six runs in the top of the third inning, including a grand slam by junior David Center (Medford, Mass.). The Lasers cut the deficit in half with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double by Cutone and Marchessault's two-run blast over the left field fence.

Newbury extended the lead to 8-3 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Lasell pulled out the game with the big eighth inning. After two runs scored on a Newbury throwing error, senior Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. Senior Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) and Sherron capped the rally with RBI singles.

The Lasers used six pitchers in the game. Sophomore Mike Tacinelli (Seymour, Conn.) recorded the win with a scoreless eighth inning, and junior David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded the save with a scoreless ninth.

Lasell will play its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games of the season this Saturday, April 7, against Rivier University. The doubleheader will be played at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass.
