ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Lasell College baseball team got its Spring Break trip underway Saturday afternoon with a pair of close losses to St. Mary's College of Maryland, 3-0 and 5-4, at the Hawk's Nest.

The Lasers managed just two hits in the opener off freshman starter Jackson Edelman (Cherry Hill, N.J.), who went the distance for the Seahawks. Junior David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) hit a third-inning single for Lasell and classmate Zach Herring (Fresno, Calif.) added a fifth-inning single.

St. Mary's scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning off Lasell sophomore starter Zach Handzel (Palmer, Mass.), who allowed just two hits and a walk in the first three innings. Freshman Andy Collins (Arlington, Va.) and junior Lucas Kraft (Boyds, Md.) had RBI singles in the inning. Juniors Justin Webb (San Diego, Calif.) and Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) combined to pitch 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Lasers, giving up just one hit.

Lasell got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of the nightcap on RBI singles by junior Rob Cutone (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.) St. Mary's tied the game in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI infield grounders, and took a 4-2 lead in the third on a run-scoring double by junior Holden Marshall (Towson, Md.) and an RBI single by Collins.

The Lasers came back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning; Herring led off with a walk and Marsell followed with a single before senior Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) delivered a one-out, two-run double. The Seahawks (4-2) answered with what would turn out to be the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Joey Bryner (Leonardtown, Md.) led off with a single, went to second on a sac bunt, and scored on a double by junior Dakota Merritt (Lexington Park, Md.)

Junior Dan Petr (East Haven, Conn.) worked four innings for Lasell, allowing five runs on six hits, striking out three, and left with a tie score in the fifth inning.

Marsell finished the day for the Lasers (0-3) with three hits and a walk in seven trips to the plate.

The Lasers will be back in on the diamond on Tuesday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference game at William Peace University in Raleigh, N.C.
