Baseball Drops a Pair of One-Run Games to Fredonia State

Fort Myers, FL- One run separated Lasell College from Fredonia State in a pair of baseball games on the final day of competition for the Lasers in Fort Myers, Florida.  Lasell was hit with a 10-9 loss in seven innings in game one against the Blue Devils and then dropped the second game, 14-13, in 11 innings. Lasell returned to Massachusetts with a 7-4 overall record, the best start in the history of the program to date.

 

As the designated visitors, Lasell went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but Fredonia matched the Lasers in the second half of the frame.  The Lasers outdid the Blue Devils 5-1 through the following two innings, but the home team put together a 7-2 stretch through the final four innings, including the necessary one run lead in the bottom of the seventh, to seal the victory. 

 

Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, MA) went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBI, Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA) and Billy Uberti (Newton, MA) also picked up two RBI and one run each, Cavanagh went 2-for-4 and Uberti produced one hit. 

 

Andrew Pompeo (Hingham, MA) went 2-for-3 with three runs and Christopher Pittman (Brockton, MA) brought in one run for the Lasers.

 

Eric Howard (Newton, MA) started on the mound for Lasell, earning a no decision after three and a third innings while Matthew Pitts (Stoneham, MA) was charged with the loss in two and a third innings.

 

In game two, Lasell took a 5-3 lead after the first inning and stretched that into a 7-6 advantage after three.  The Blue Devils took the lead by one run in the fourth but Lasell was able to even the score in the fifth.  Through seven innings, the teams landed in an 11-all stalemate.

 

Two more runs on both sides were scored in the eighth, and the score remained knotted at 13 until Fredonia rounded the bags once in the 11th inning to win, 14-13.

 

Six Lasers had a pair of hits in the game with Pompeo leading the way with three RBI.  Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA), Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT), Pittman, and Cavanagh all brought in two Lasell runners. 

 

Mike Rodriguez (Brockton, MA) made the start for Lasell, striking out four Blue Devils in three and two thirds innings.  Uberti was hit with the loss, retiring two batters in the final five innings of work. 

 

Lasell's next contest is at their home field, Stein Diamond, at Brandeis University on Tuesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. against Framingham State University.
